INDIVIDUAL MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY
I offer individual therapy services for adolescent and adult clients who suffer from a range of mental health challenges and diagnoses. I am experienced in supporting clients with mood and anxiety struggles, trauma experiences, relationship dynamics, and those working through life's challenges and looking to deepen their relationship with themselves and the world around them. I emphasize self-compassion, acceptance, insight, awareness, healing, and growth through an emotion-focused, experiential therapeutic style.
EATING DISORDER & EATING/BODY ISSUES THERAPY
As a former Primary Therapist at Eating Recovery Center, I have been trained extensively in the treatment of individuals struggling with eating disorders, including Anorexia, Bulimia, OSFED, and ARFID. I specialize in adolescent ED care through a Family-Based Treatment (FBT) lens and am well-versed at collaborating with treatment team members to coordinate care for clients. Beyond that specific niche, I also am very passionate about and experienced in the therapeutic care of any individual who struggles with eating and body concerns and believe that in our current cultural climate, everyone deserves the space to process their relationship with their body.
TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY
THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
The core values and beliefs that I base my work on as a therapist stem from the Person-Centered therapeutic model. The tenets that this model espouses include empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard. These essentially mean that first and foremost I offer a deep and compassionate understanding of where my clients are coming from and I work hard to walk alongside them in their personal journey. I also am committed to being my most authentic self with my clients...you will see my tears, heart, and vulnerability at every turn. Finally, I unconditionally love and accept the individuals I have the honor of working with.
Throughout the therapeutic process, I am likely to draw upon these other modalities to aid my clients in skill-building and self-understanding:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)
Family-Based Treatment (FBT)
INCLUSIVITY AND EQUALITY
All persons are welcome in my practice. Nan Bishop Therapy, LLC is a safe space for all individuals and all identities. I practice from a Health At Every Size (HAES) lens, meaning that I am accepting of and advocates for all bodies and promote the de-stigmatization of those persons in bodies not typically classified as "healthy" by some members of the medical and cultural community. I am an ally to those in marginalized communities and I take great care in honoring that responsibility.
ABOUT ME
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing in the state of Colorado. I hold a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Colorado, Denver and received my BA in Psychology from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. My passion for mental health has lead me to work in myriad settings across the US, from researching child development at The National Institutes of Health, volunteering at a domestic violence center and the Eating Disorder Foundation, to counseling adolescents with substance use disorders and children with trauma histories, and most recently to serving as Primary Therapist at Eating Recovery Center for 2.5 years.
I have studied hard, practiced harder, and have engaged in my own profound journey of self-understanding and healing. I have personally recovered from an eating disorder and have worked through issues with anxiety and depression in my past, and so from the bottom of my heart, I want to offer my clients a hand to hold from right alongside them in their own journey to mental health and self-compassion. I have navigated this path from a professional and personal lens and I bring both of these powerful viewpoints to every session. I am your guide, but I am indeed also your companion and fellow survivor of suffering.
